Question:

Is there some sort of evidence or indication that abstaining from s*x increases one's lifespan? in a 1 case..

in 1 case, some type of fly, which mates in the spring, was segregated by s*x (to prevent the males from mating with the females), and this allowed these flies to live until the next spring. The indication is the a member of a species lives long enough to pass their genes; the consummation of this end signals the denouement of one's life. At least that was the indication for the flies, which more than doubled their life span by not "having s*x."

Does this apply to humans? Could abstaining from the use of our sexual organs "trick" our body into thinking that it hasn't completed its life purpose and therefore needs more time--that is, trick the body to enhance longevity?

I'd appreciate if anyone was knowledgeable about the subject. Thanks!

  1. you will not live longer it will just seem like it

  2. I agree with benyuk, no s*x will not make you live longer... but your life will seem an eternity.

The only case I think that abstaining from s*x increases the lifespan is the black widow spider... according to the urban legend, the female eats the male after mating

  3. This isn't true at all. Although it may in fact apply to this type of fly (we don't know everything), it is certainly not the case in humans. The study suggests that the flies are genetically programmed to die shortly after mating. Humans are not. We usually die due to organ failure, which is ultimately the result of the information loss during cell division (Google "telomere" if you're interested) and the damage done to mitochondria by free-radical oxygen species generated during metabolism.

As a matter of fact, you may live longer if you have s*x (as long as you don't catch HIV, of course) than if you don't, because of the relaxing effect (everybody knows that you'll live longer if you relax).

In any case, many people really enjoy having s*x, and I'm not sure if they would consider that a slightly longer life is "worth" what they have to give up to obtain it, even if that were possible...

  4. It may increase lifespan, but it doesn't increase quality of life!

  5. As mentioned, there have been a number of studies of Catholic nuns.  One concluded that there was a higher risk of cervical cancer in virgin women.  Is this because the test group was not as "in touch" with their own bodies?  Also, there is a significant rate of depression in this subgroup.  Following along with this is high blood pressure, heart attacks, etc

  6. all the fat nerds have never had s*x because they play videogames and do other wierd  things. so the answer is no. s*x is something to enjoy, why avoid it. (becareful who you choose to have it with becuase they could carry stds)

  7. This would make sense if humans and flies shared the same type of reproductive strategies, but they don't.  In fact, some studies have indicated that having regular or frequent s*x increases lifespan (at least in men; women might be a different story).

Flies are what are known as R-strategists in biology jargon.  Basically, this means that they favor quantity over quality.  Rather than investing parental care in their offspring to ensure that they all survive, flies throw all their energy into creating vast numbers of offspring in the hopes that at least some will survive.  This mass expenditure of energy is essentially what causes such an early death.

Humans, on the other hand, are called K-strategists.  We take the opposite route of quality over quantity.  Rather than blowing all our energy in a single reproductive event, we generally produce a single offspring at a time.  We expend energy over a longer period of time to ensure that the few offspring that we do produce will make it to adulthood.  Instead of a gamble with large numbers of kids, we make certain that all of our kids survive.  Because our energy isn't completely expended all at once, it isn't fatal like it is in flies.

These different strategies have more to do with the organism's chances of survival in general, not so much their biological goal of reproducing.  R-strategists generally live in rapidly changing environments or have low chances of surviving due to factors like predation.  That's why you tend to see it in smaller, prey organisms.  K-strategists generally live in more stable areas and have reasonably high survival rates.  Humans aren't usually in constant risk of being eaten by something, so we can afford to invest lots of time in a few children instead of producing hundreds and running for safety.

  8. I highly doubt that not having s*x will increase your life span. It may help protect you from alot of things (babies, STDs). But actually increase how many years you got left. That all applies to your eating habits, exercise, family history. So sorry to say but NO.

  9. No, all the fat nerds have never had s*x, and i dont see them living till a 100..

  10. Yes, do not have s*x at all so you can live longer. That's a goal.

  11. If anything..it would decrease your life span..it is a necessary outlet and need...HUGS!!
