Question:

Is there some truth in dumb luck?

I know dumb luck doesn't mean luck of the dumb but some of the dumbest people I've known have been the luckiest people in the world. I'm talking about sweet, innocent and oblivious people that generally just float through life with very few traumatic experiences. Now, I'm not a smart person and consider myself slightly below average to average intelligence and I also tend to dwell on completely idiotic stoner logic but I just wanted to hear people's opinion.

  1. Dumb luck is a perception. We as individuals were generally raised to work hard for rewards, and to believe that life (and the world) is fair in what comes around, goes around.  While rationally we know people can have the worst luck at random, subconsciously we think that they somehow deserved it (bad karma, did a misdeed previously, etc).  By contrast, those blessed with good luck, when we can't attribute why they are "fortune's favourite", we call it dumb luck.

I do agree with you -  it does seem some people float through life with a golden horseshoe, but then again we are not privy to all of their lives to really make that assertion.

  2. Stoner logic lol...

  3. I think the definition of dumb luck is to succeed in spite of your own actions. I think poker is an excellent example of this, where you can make an error, but still outdraw your opponent for the win, no matter how low your chances...
