Is there some way of finding out how big an organisation is (i.e. number of employees) ...?

..WITHOUT contacting the organisation themselves? Like is there some kind of list or something?

check via google to find their official website.  It may be stated there.  Corporations will sometimes state the number, but will not list employee.

yes. this information is avalible to buy from market research companies, bit pricey though

If you are in the UK, Companies House has a register of every limited company in UK and they have info. about what the company does, how many employees, etc.  Check them out on the web.
