    Hardness is usually an empirical measurement of a substances resistance to scratching or denting. Many things, even other metals, have more hardness than steel. Diamonds, for example, are renowned for their hardness, and are used for cutting in many industrial applications.

    Steel's real advantage is that it is both strong and flexible, allowing it to absorb a fantastic amount of force (i.e. weight) without breaking, and in this regard, there is really no superior material.

    There are however, certain steel-fiber composites and exotic steel allows being developed that may have much better material qualities.
