  1. Traditionally it has been the Hoe.

I have heard Canadian geese do a good Job.

I don,t think anyone should use herbicides in a small garden.

  2. Yes, your hands. Having a vegetable garden requires DAILY tending. That means weeding. Do you REALLY want to spray chemicals to kill weeds near your vegetables? Get a hoe and work the soil. That's what gardening is about.

  3. yes we have selective herbicides to kill the unwanted plants here to say the grass.

  4. There are herbicides specific to grasses, Poast is one that comes to mind.  However you really have to be careful with herbicides around vegetables- most are not labled for all vegetables and you definitely need to follow the lable directions closely.  Mechanical weed control ( the hoe, a rototiller) is usuall effective.  You can also try heavy layers of mulch such as straw or poly film muches.  I have used newspaper as a mulch successfully in the past, simply layer newspaper around the plants, wet it a little, and cover with a little compost.

  5. Yes, there is a herbacide that is specific to grasses.  But I wouldn't use it near plants I was planning to eat.

The HOE is a really good tool.  Get a good one that stays sharp.  Or just get down on your knees and use your fingers.  It really does feel good.  (Getting back up can be hard sometimes.)
