Question:

Is there something wrong with my Chicken?

On the 27th of June we picked up our 6 chicks from the store we ordered them from. I'm worried about one of my chicks, Meryl is her name, she's actually my favorite. She's gonna be a laying hen, but as all her sisters get older and more developed now, she still small and has a very huge breast. Everyone else is just starting to loose thier baby feathers and she's behind. She doesn't do much, all the others run around and chirp, she just stands there, walks, eats and sleeps. Could there be something wrong with her?

Thanks alot for any help.

  1. I bought some standard Polish from a hatchery. One of the blue Polish was sluggish when they arrived. That was on June 18. Today when I went back there it was dead. Sometimes they have things wrong with them that they can't grow out of. Mine was eating and drinking by it's self but it just stayed humped up and fluffy. I didn't really expect the bird to make it this long. So far I have only lost the extras that they packaged with my chicks. I ordered 25 turkeys. They sent 27 on July 1 and I still have 26 turkeys alive and doing well. They need heat until they are well feathered out. Your babies need to still have heat afforded to them. They need to be where they can move away from the light or get closer if it is cool.

  2. time for frying.

  3. She may be in the bottom of the pecking order and thereby doesn't get as much to eat as the others or she could just be what you might call . . . the runt of the litter (clutch).

I've had this to happen and in the 5 chicks I have now I have this happening but not to worry, the smallest one eventually catches up and they will all end up being the same size for that particular breed of chicken.
