Question:

Is there something wrong with my babys legs??

My little boy Brendan turns one on the 28th August, he was born 5 weeks early and although small he was totally fine and healthy.

He is still small for his age as he is wearing 9-12month clothes and they are really quite big for him.

He is still not even crawling either, he drags himself along the floor with his hands and one leg, staying on his stomach. He gets up on his hands and knees then just collapses again on to his stomach. he doesn't seem to be in any pain whatso ever. When he is dragging himself along he uses only one leg, the other he keeps quite straight and doesn't use at all.

However, when i stand him up on his feet he seems fine and stands straight with both legs.

Could there be something wrong with his legs or is he as everyone else is suggesting just being lazy?? Of course he was 5 weeks early, putting him 5 weeks behind but surely he shuld be crawling by now??

If anyone needs anymore information please just ask. Thanks all xxxx

  1. My kids did the one leg crawl, also. There's nothing wrong with that. For your peace of mind, ask his dr at his 1 yr check up.

  2. Why aren't you addressing this issue with his pediatrician? Trust your gut and if you think something isn't right - take him in to the doctor. He could be referred to an orthopaedic specialist and the problem corrected while he is little. I would get it checked out.

And to Susan - if your baby never crawled, this should be addressed too. There is a strong link between crawling and literacy. Most babies who do not crawl have reading/writing learning disabilities. There is therapy for babies who haven't crawled by age 12 mos. I would seriously recommend asking about it! My husband's uncle never crawled and he still cannot read.

  3. There are some babies that do this, I don't think there's anything wrong with him at all. Especially if you hold him up and he stands correctly. Every childs development patterns vary a little, I'm sure that he will start crawling/walking soon.

  4. My third oldest daughter didn't start walking until she was about 14 months. She didn't even start talking until she was 2 years old. If you have any worries tell his pediatrician. He can also set him up with an orthopedic doctor that will check his legs. Don't worry to much. He will be fine. He is a cutie. Good luck.

  5. Don't worry about it he'll be maturing pretty soon just a little later than some babies there's nothing wrong, though. If it continues around his 1st birthday to 1 and a half go to a doctor, but I'm pretty sure he's fine

  6. All babies are different. My daughter just turned one and she has never crawled. Instead, she scoots on her butt. He is being mobile, which is a very good thing. Let your pediatrician know what is going on during your next visit.

  7. all kids develope at different times.  One of my kids walked at 11 months, one at 9, and the other just plain didnt feel like it, and she didnt walk until she was over one.  My niece, on the other hand, walks (at almost one) but never crawled.  Hes probably fine, but you should check with your dr just to make sure.

  8. Did he see his doctor for his 9 month check up?  Is he sitting up alone by now?

My third daughter had developmental delays and low tone, she did not sit up until 16 months, she walked at 25 months, but she needed physical therapy to catch up.

I think if he can stand up fine alone, then he is ok.  Some babies do not crawl. My first daughter never crawled, she rolled everywhere until she was 1 year old, and then walked on her birthday.  My other children both walked at 16 months (my second and fourth). I don't think you have anything to worry about, but talk to your doctor at his 1 year visit.  Good luck.

**  To add: to the answerer above, my oldest daughter never crawled, as I stated, but she could speak 400 words at 15 months, and is now in an enrichment program in school in first grade, reading novels and science journals.  There is no proven link between crawling and learning disabilities.
