My friend's cat started throwing up about 2 months ago about once a week. He isn't showing any other symptoms other than vomiting. He hasn't gained or lost any weight. His vomit doesn't have blood or anything like that in it. He eats a few ants because they get in his food bowl.Oh yeah he also eats grass, buts hes always done that and hes never thrown up. Could there be something wrong?

  1. Is the puke pretty much all food?  Then I'm guessing he is eating his food too fast every once and a while.  Usually eating anything green can trigger vomit.

Ants in his food bowl are probably not a good thing.

  2. cats eat grass when they are feeling sick.......whether they think it helps them, who knows.  He is probably just bringing up hairballs, all cats do it, whether they have long or short hair.   its just from overgrooming.  Keep an eye on him and if you are still concerned, then take him to a vet for a checkup.

  3. It's more than likely fur balls! Remember Garfield?!

Cats are meticulous groomers, and if your friend doesn't groom her cat regularly then the cat itself will groom more - to clean itself by trying to brush out with it's tongue loose hair .... when a cat does this they swallow as they groom and the fur collected on their tongue collects in their gullet.... after a while (could be weekly) their gullet gets full and they start coughing and spluttering a bit, sometimes they drool spittle as well  and hey presto - one fur ball!  (The grass is eaten to help with this process!)..... So unless the cat drinks water excessively, doesn't want to eat, seems lethargic - or restless and can't seem to lay down properly without getting up again and moving around ..... then there's nothing else to worry about.... however if you or your friend do notice things you think should not be happening then get the cat to the vet as soon as possible as when a cat gets ill it can get to them very quickly - sometimes within a day - so don't delay in seeking veterinary help.....

If you're generally unsure of the cat's health get a quick check up with the vet - better to be told you were silly, there's nothing wrong - than to be sorry for not acting quicker......

  4. If it looks like Cat Food, he is simply Eating too fast. Tell your Friend to fee him in smaller amounts, once or twice a Day.

and Try to keep ants out of the bowl!

  5. animals throw up.  they eat stuff they shouldnt all the time.  it happens.  unless its happening every day or has something ike blood or mucus in it, the cat will be fine!

  6. Your friend's cat needs a trip to the vet. Yes cats will eat grass when not feeling well. However; regular vomiting or regurgitation (do you know the difference?) is cause for concern.

My cat probably has IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). This causes her to regurgitate her food. Regurgitation is when the food comes back up almost immediately after eating, and looks pretty much the same as it went down. Most times it will be in a tube shape, especially if it is dry food.

Vomit is digested food, will be watery with bile.

Ants can be poisonous. There is a type of ant called Formica Ants. Their defense is to spray or exude formic acid.

Is this cat being fed outside? How often is the food being changed? If it is canned food and the food sits out for more than an hour or two, ESPECIALLY in the heat of summer, the food will turn and make the cat sick. The area around the food dish must be cleaned with detergent and rinsed well. Same with the food bowl. The ant trail to the food bowl must be broken. Then the food must be changed frequently. Even dry food will become stale in just a few hours. I change my cat's food every 3 hours, whether she's eaten it or not. And it is very expensive prescription food.

  7. Most likely there isn't any problem, but a visit to the vet might not hurt just to make sure there isn't some invisible problem.

Cats often throw up after eating grass since their system can't digest it. Cats are carnivores not herbivores so their system isn't attuned to vegetable matter even though they like to eat it.
