Well, my hamster has started doing this, I'm sure he always has, but I havnt noticed it till now..

He'll like sit up on his hind legs and just stare at something for the longest time..then just snap out of it and act normal..

Its weird..

Is this normal..or..is there something mentally wrong with my hamster.

P.s, he's a teddy bear hamster.

  1. Sweetie, your hamster is fine. He is either just being curious because he heard a noise or he's smelling something. If he hears a noise that frightens him then he may stop and stay still as a form of protecting himself. He's trying to go unnoticed so if somethings there it won't see him and go after him. He doesn't know there's nothing there.

I had a teddy bear hamster and other hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils. They will all do that, just like when you see a squirrel in the wild and when it see's you it freezes. If he isn't scared he is just smelling. Look to see if his nose is moving (though you might not always be able to tell). All of my little animals would stand up still when smelling something. It maybe that they think they smell a predator or something appetizing. My guinea pigs would squeak, chirp and yelp if they heard lettuce and then once it was above or near their cage they would suddenly get still so they could smell where it was. (just because you don't hear or smell something doesn't mean they don't. their hearing and smell senses are very sensitive)

Don't be alarmed. If you would like you can always purchase a hamster guide so you know their characteristics and what to expect.

I hope this helps. You'll get used to it.

  2. He's fine. There is nothing mentally wrong with him, he is probably just bored. Is there a wheel in there for him? And something he can chew on like the cardboard of a toilet paper roll?

  3. My hamster does that all the time (she's a Syrian hamster, so same thing...). Although, mine doesn't do it for a very long time... Honestly, it might be an early sign of dementia. Is he old? If so, then that's probably it. Otherwise it's just normal behavior for your hamster.

  4. MY TEDDY BEAR HAMSTER DOES IT ALL THE TIME I ENSURE YOU THERES NO PROBLEM WITH YOUR HAMSTER

  5. just normal behavior.   i used to have 5 hamsters all teddy bear, they all would do that. i think they are just being aware of their surroundings. it might hear, see, or smell something new and try to check it out. Good Luck
