Question:

Is there something wrong with my refrigerator?

I got a new refrigerater earlier this year since the old one was breaking down. The new one doesnt have any major problems except this one: I don't know if the temperature is too cold as I always set it to low and the vegetables and fruits get so cold they get super frozen and usually we have to throw the vegetable and fruits in the trash can becasue it's super frozen and some even have icicles on them. We at first set the temperature settings to normal but now we put it on low and it still does that sometimes. What can be wrong? My old fridge never did that. And that frige is by whirlpool too. So it's not some cheap unknown brand. We had an old whirlpool as well and it was really good and never did that. This brand new model gets my veggies and fruits frozen a lot of times. Anyone have any solution to this or know what happened? Any knowledge and/or opinions would be appreciated. Thank you!

  1. The older time refrigerators are made better than the new ones they are making.  But it sounds like to me.  You need to call the repair man.  If it is new.  It is probably still got a warranty on it.  And it want cost you anything.  Who installed the new refrigerator?  If they laid it down on its side.  Before they installed in your house.  I would say its the compressor.  You never lay a refrigerator on its side.  If you do let it set 3 hours before you plug it up.  That is so the oil in the compressor will settle back down.

  2. I would recommend buy a thermometer and see where your fridge is cooling.  The fridge part should be somewhere near 42 degrees Fahrenheit.  If it is freezing stuff, then it is well below that.  Most fridges recommend starting at middle of the  control dial and working up and down as needed.  Sounds to me like you need to go up some.   Give that a try, should help.

  3. Two things:

If air can't circulate, in freezer or refrig, it can cause this type of problem.

Contact both Whirlpool and the place where you bought it.

If the variance in freezing or refrigerating doesn't coincide with fullness in either compartment, document this, too.  The more complete the written record you have, the more quickly the vendor and/or Whirlpool will be able to rule out other possigilites and find the cause.

  4. Some fridges have a meat drawer which is colder than the rest of the fridge.  There is usually a setting for it to determine how cold you want it.  If you have your fruits and veggies in this meat drawer, they will freeze.  Read your book and it may help you understand what is going on.
