Is there something wrong with this picture?

I am a dental student and I have a LOT of friends that are of all races and ethnicities... Indian, Chinese, African, Iranian etc. but when I'm in clinic, I am relieved to see that I have a black american to work on because I somehow feel if I s***w up it won't be as big of a deal. I respect blacks...especially nice ones, but I fear this minor thing will be a big deal when I start in my own practice. Thoughts? If bad, how do I overcome this?

  1. Do the world a favor and drop out of dental school immediately, if indeed you are a dental student. This "minor thing" proves you are not morally fit for the profession, and you would clearly fail economically as well once the lawsuits started rolling in. But it looks as though you are really just a troll and not a dental student at all.

  2. Wow... and I was trying to convince my self that ignorance and racism didn't exist in any form.

Listen you may not think you're coming off racist, but you are... and with that is discrimination. Any time two people are equal because of color it's a problem. You said it yourself, "somehow feel if I s***w up it won't be as big of a deal." It should be as big of a deal as any white client, or Chinese client. And if it's not to you, then you need to address those issues.

The way to overcome it: Well if you already think like this naturally them it's going to take a lot of prayer. You need to ask God to cleanse your heart and mind of this racist behavior. And he can do it.

I feel bad for you and your clients... you're probably a nice person, but your though process isn't nice. I'm black and I was very offended. Please pray and I will pray for you too.

We must be the change we wish to see in the world.

  3. The fact that you recognize there is a difference is a good sign.  Now you can do something about it.  I would be more worried if you dreaded working on blacks.  Mentally prepare yourself that you are going to do your best with every client regardless of skin color.

I don't think you are "bad", I think you are uninformed.  There are many interesting things about every culture, read books, watch TV, movies, talk to people.  I have a black american friend, everyday is a learning experience with her.  I grew up in a small town and the idea of dating a black girl would have been unheard of, but I joined the military and met girls who I would have like to have gone out with, but I was already married.  Underneath the skin, we are all pretty much the same.
