I love trains. I love to cook. I thought it would be alsome to work on a train cooking for the travelers. I want to know, is there still, train trips like that in The United States? If So Where? Do they get paid well?

  1. I know that I have traveled on Amtrak and they have cooks, because I've eaten their meals.  I have no idea how hard it is to get a job with them or how much it pays.  I would check out the Amtrak site and see if they have a section on job opportunities.

Update: Okay, I just checked their site, and there aren't any cooking jobs that leap out at me.  (I put the link in my sources.)  They are hiring "Lead Service Attendants" who seem to be involved in the food service.  The starting pay is $14.87/hour.  I would try calling them directly to get more details about the kind of positions that exist: 1-877-268-7251.  This is their job line.  I don't know if it is a recording or a real person.

  2. There are excursion trains that offer dining while riding.  Where I live, in Mt. Shasta, Ca., the McCloud River Railroad operates "dinner trains" each weekend throughout the summer and fall, and some specials around the holidays.

Even more appealing to the paying public are the "Murder Mystery Specials" wherein an Agatha Christy "Murder on the Orient Express" type scenario is played out, with a return of fare for he who figures out and solves the "crime."

I think the Sierra Railroad operating out of James Town in the Sierra Mountains of central California operates dinner specials as well.
