Is there still train travel (for leisure) in the US?

I'm not talking subways.....Amtrack, vacation package travel.

Actually, in the US, rail travel is best when undertaken as a leisure activity.  As a means of transportation, particularly where time is concerned, it is oft not the best means of "getting there".

AMTRAK covers the most ground, obviously, and is not the same as day excursion or dinner trains on tourist lines and short lines looking to supplement income from freight operations.  Where I live, the McCloud River Rail Road is one such entity.  Though they have abandoned their live steam operations, they run day excursions over holidays and during local festivals, as well as the Sunset Dinner Train, that features fine dining and entertainment, the latter usually in the form of a "who dunnit" murder mystery.

Have a travel agent help put together a tour/travel package with you.  You'll get the best rates for accommodations as well as travel on AMTRAK or any of a couple dozen tourist railroads, such as Roaring Camp and Big Trees or the Skunk Line, both in Northern California, or the Cass Scenic Railway.

try looking up the american orient express. the cubres and toltec (not sure  on spelling but a search will find it) is a pretty legnthy trip. if you try searching rail travel or talk to a travel agent you should be able to find some things.

Amtrack is about it, other than local cruise types, dinner included. A guy told me the Amtrack from California to east coast is fabulous
