Question:

Is there such a by-law in Edinburgh that says children can't play in shared greens?

I live in a tenement building with a shared back/drying green - my daughter and her 2 friends were chased out by one of the other stair tenants - I must point out they were playing quietly not causing a fuss - when I asked him why he said there is a by-law that children aren't allowed to play on the green - is this true or is he grumpy?

  1. Moany old b*****d!

I was forever being chased out of our garden by the grumpy gardener - me and my sister used to play like angels! Well.. maybe not angels but kids are kids - they have to have some kind of adventure. Tell the other tenants to get a grip. If the kids are playing nicely I see no problem with it. It is a garden after all - that's what it is there for!

  2. I would be surprised if there was. This is certainly NOT the case in Glasgow, but then we are more civilised in the west than the east.

Contact either the Licensing Department or the Planning Department at City of Edinburgh Council.

  3. If you have a look at your deeds you will find that the back green is a communal / shared area accessible to all tenants. (Usually as a drying / bleaching area.)

Your neighbour is a grumpy old git.

  4. bollocks! ask the grumpy auld git to show you the by-law in print!

  5. Never heard such rubbish in my life. You have as much right to your back green as anyone else in the stair.
