Is there such a site that I can get an estimated value of a piece of jewelry by the description?

I have an appraisal that was done March 15, 1994. The description is in detail and I would like to know if it's possible to get an estimate by the description only of a diamond ring in 2008. if so, what is the name of the site or web?

  1. I am a GIA graduate gemologist and jewelry appraiser, so I can answer your question with authority.

There are so many nuances to jewelry appraisal, that I cannot imagine a website that could be set up within reasonable accuracy to make it a "do-it-yourself" thing.  I searched professional sites to which I have access, and can find nothing.

But, depending upon your actual needs, I think a solution could be found, albeit not one on the web.

First, it depends on what you mean by "get an estimate."  If you mean an estimate of its retail replacement value (which, if the 1994 appraisal is a good one, should clearly state if that is how the piece is being valued--other options would be for estate purposes, market value, etc.), I know that I could come up with a value pertinent to your area, assuming the description is truly detailed enough...But, same as anyone else who has the expertise to do so, I would charge you for my time.  Also, there would be no signed, written document, since I could not affirm the piece actually existed.  Just FYI, a retail replacement value appraisal can also be called an insurance appraisal.

Second, if you are looking to SELL the piece, it really doesn't matter what someone appraises it for.  Its market value lies with the purchaser, and how much that person would be willing to pay for it.  If you find an end consumer who is knowledgeable about the market, they will obviously want to pay you less for a 14-year old piece of jewelry than a new one.  If you are selling to someone in the jewelry business, the MOST they would pay you is its current wholesale value, but you could also only be paid based on the meltdown value.  In the end, when you are selling a piece, while you might want to know its current retail value, that doesn't matter if no one will pay you close to that.

Third, if you are trying to determine value for other purposes (divorce, estate, barter, charity donation), you MUST get a professional appraisal done, as those are specialty circumstances that require special calculations and wording in the body of the appraisal.

If you think you want an email consult just to reach a number, you can reach me via email at babs@alarajewelry.com, and I'll give you details regarding how to proceed.
