  1. after reading all of these replies, and being vegan myself, it seems very logical, since I don't enjoy the cruelty of animals....but they are a bit different, plants and animals. Where we hear animal's pain, we dont with plants, so no one can be sure that they dont feel it...yes, they have no brain, but  then again no one knows the meaning of life either....

anyway, I'm sure everyone around me would disown me if I did go fruititarian, and it would be very difficult. I'd like to meet one though.

  2. When I was in college I knew a guy who was a fruitarian. He was a very logical guy (he was a mathematician) and he realized that if it is unethical to kill animals, it's just as unethical to kill plants. So he would eat only fruits - mostly bananas. He wasn't the healthiest looking guy I've ever seen.

I haven't kept track of him, so I don't know what's happened to him since college.

  3. No, fruitarianism is not a sustainable diet in the long term.

You can't call yourself a "something-ian" if you only practice it for a short period of time, if that were the case everyone who ate fruit can call themselves fruitarians while they're eating fruit.

  4. I think I heard them mentioned in a sketch show or some comedy movie and thought at the time that it was just a joke, but I am sure that they exist now.

There are some really freaky diets, like people who only eat fruits after they fall off the trees on their own.

And their are people who, by religion, will not eat vegetables with long roots. The fear being that whilst the veg is gathered, an insect may have been squashed.

  5. yup

  6. Yes, fruitarians are real. They only eat fruits and such that falls from the tree.

  7. i heard that fruitarions will only eat vegetables or fruits that have fallen off the tree. a little bit extreme i might say. they dont want to hurt the trees, so they eat mush.

  8. Yes, there is such a thing though their numbers are probably much more limited than even vegans and raw foodists.

I suspect many of these might only do so for a relatively short period of time.

  9. I think they are the Homosexual Political Party.

  10. lol

    maybe

but i dont think thats a real term.

  11. Yes, I have heard of this for sure!

  12. That's very politically incorrect. I think the proper term is "g*y."

  13. yes.

Fruitarianism is a strict form of veganism that is limited to eating the ripe fruits of plants and trees. Fruitarians eat in principle only the fruit of plants. As with other dietary practices, such as vegetarianism and raw foodism, some people consider themselves fruitarians even if their diet is not 100% fruit. According to these people, as long as the percentage is higher than 50%, they are (predominantly) fruitarian. Usually fruitarians who include foods other than fruit follow a vegan diet.

However, the Health Promotion Program at Columbia University reports that a fruitarian diet can cause deficiencies in calcium, protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, most B vitamins (especially B-12), and essential fatty acids. Additionally, the Health Promotion Program at Columbia reports that food restrictions in general may lead to hunger, cravings, food obsessions, social disruptions and social isolation.

Lack of protein in fleshy fruit can make the lifestyle difficult to sustain, and can lead to the condition of hypoproteinemia or kwashiorkor. Nuts (if included) are a good source of protein. Due to the lower digestibility of plant proteins, however, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) states "protein needs might be higher than the RDA dietary protein sources are mainly those that are less well digested, such as some cereals and legumes."

Vitamin B12, a bacterial product, is not found in any fruits. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health "natural food sources of vitamin B12 are limited to foods that come from animals." Like vegans that do not consume B12-fortified foods (certain plant milks and breakfast cereals, for example), fruitarians need to include a B12 supplement in their diet. This may pose a health risk for strict fruitarians, as the B12 in fortified foods and supplements is derived from bacteria, not fruits. It is also contrary to the philosophy that humans are perfectly evolved to live off of fruit.

  14. Yes, they eat fruit, nuts, and some vegetables/legumes that do not kill the plant when picked.

  15. I have known people that called themselves fruitarians for real. They only ate fruit and seeds like pumpkin seeds, raw nuts and avocados.

A typical day of food for my friend Mike was:

    Breakfast

    6 cherries

    1 Banana

    Lunch

    Avocado

    Lime

Raw pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds marinated in lemon juice, cayenne pepper,  braggs amino acids and nutritional yeast.

    Sprouts

    Dinner

    A whole cassaba melon

    Raw Almonds

Mike was very thin. He worked at an organic produce cart. He was not an average person and the other vegetarians and vegans considered him to be odd. Go figure.
