I know there's Organic beer, are there othere alcohols without sulphides, preservatives?? Wines are my favorite but I've been told that it's the sulphides that give me my huge headache even if I only have two glasses! Also since I seem to be affected by Monosodium Glutemate and other preservatives. I've read that they are carcinogins too. I'm going to try to get more organic so does anyone have links/info on this subject please? Thanks.

  1. The sulphites/sulphides are naturally occuring to a minute degree, but unfortunately they will put additional sulphites in to increase the aging process time.  It's purely more time & cost effective for the wineries and I agree it's just another short-cut at the expense of people like you and me.  The pain is pretty bad and people think I have a hangover, but it's not that!

You can go to Whole Foods Grocery if you have one in your area. Try any Natural Food Store and ask their wine steward.  It may cost a bit more but at least you can enjoy a nice Cabernet without the horrible after-pain.  I've included two links below if you wish to buy online.

  2. Yes there are many organic wines. Often a wine is organic and the wine maker does not even mention it on the label. Organic does not mean sulfite free. Sulfites are added to wines to prevent pre-mature fermentation if the grapes have a lot of available sugar and there is the certain danger of air-born yeast feeding on that sugar. Sulfites also naturally occur during the fermentation process. To get a sulfite free wine is to get a wine that they have actually removed the sulfites from. Chances are the wine isn't going to be very good. You can buy wine with "no added sulfites".  Better yet, try some wines from the "old world" such as France and Italy. Cooler climate wines have less available sugar and there for the wine makers don't have to add a lot of sulfites. When buying wine pay attention to what it says on the lable. If a wine comes from warm climate and has a high alcohol content 14% or more. It means there was a lot of available sugar to produce all the alcohol and therefore they had to add a lot of sulfites to keep the grapes fresh before extracting the juice.

  7. I think you can look it up on Google,or Ask.com and you can find interesting facts

  8. I work at  a Napa winery, and its possible to make wine without sulfides, but they would only keep for 2-3 months before spoiling.

Hard liquors have a high enough alcohol content to keep the alcohol from spoiling, and wine is just below that alcohol percentage.

If you want a "wine" without sulfides try looking for a Port, as it is a wine and hard alcohol mixture with a high enough proof to keep from going bad.

But as for headaches, I wouldn't worry about the sulfides too much, its the alcohol that does most of it.
