  2. There is no such thing as a free UK online lotto.  You need to purchase a ticket for a chance to win the lottery.   If you have been sent an unsolicted email stating you have won the lottery, then this is a SCAM. Check out the below link for confirmation of various email scams, including the famous Yahoo/MSN lottery scams hitting the internet and how to report them :

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/or...

Unscrupulous thieves have sent you this email and they are trying to part you from your hard earned cash. They will often ask you to call a premium rate number and keep you holding on whilst you rack up a huge phone bill. They are then paid a large proportion of this phone bill. They may ask you to divulge personal information about yourself or ask for your bank or credit card details. Do not divulge any such information under any circumstances. It is surprising how many innocent victims have been duped by these types of emails. Just remember the thieves who send them are very clever and extremely convincing. I suggest you delete the email and send it into cyberspace, hopefully along with the thieving scumbags who send them.

  3. You might be able to buy UK lottery tickets online. I don't live in the UK, so I can't answer that for sure.

But the key word there is "buy." The lottery commission is not going to award you money if you didn't buy a ticket. How can you win something that you don't play?

Most likely, you have received an e-mail scam. These fall under the category of Advance Fee Fraud - named such because, to claim the (nonexistent) prize, you must pay fees in advance. Courier fees. Delivery fees. Processing fees. Whatever. You'll wire cash to the scammers, and you'll never see the lottery prize because it doesn't really exist.

A good sign that you've received a scam e-mail is the e-mail address. Legitimate lottery commissions do not use GMail, Yahoo! Mail, or other free e-mail accounts. They typically have their own domains, in fact, and send/receive mail from there.

If they even use e-mail to notify winners in the first place. Here, the lottery commission doesn't do that because they don't know which person has the winning ticket until that person shows up to claim his or her winnings.

Anyway. The best thing to do with scam e-mails is to simply delete them and forget that they exist. If you report the e-mail address to the provider to have it closed down, you might wreck a law enforcement division's active investigation. That could really hurt people who have lost money to these scammers.
