Is there such a thing as a diamond finder?

Logically if diamonds are the hardest rock known to man, then shouldnt there be some kind of x-ray/radar equipment that can use waves to detect where diamonds are located by the intensity of the wave bouncing back to a device? Maybe I'm ignorant, but does anyone know if such an invention exists? Is that what commercial diamond minors use?

  1. yes but no affordable. think about it a machine that is able to search for a million dollars.

  2. In theory that could work, but you need to remember how tiny most diamonds are, you would never really be sure if it was a blip on the screen or a diamond.  What is actually done by commercial miners is (this is a simplified version) first find a certain type of rock by drilling core samples in a place they believe is likely to have diamonds.  If they find this certain type of rock - Kimberlite - They will then either keep testing, or start mining for the diamonds!
