Is there such a thing as a temporary cell phone?

Question

I will be coming to the States for a month long trip in MN. Can I buy a temporary cell phone where I can pre-pay or something to use while I'm there?? If so, where can I look to buy one?? or can I buy a different sim card to just plug it into my current cell phone to use or do they not do that over there??

i think metro pc sells phones and you basicly pay for the phone itself..then there are some plans which you can use for like a month, not sure though
