My son has just informed me that he has blown the engine of his third car.

He keeps either putting too much or not enough oil in his cars and just blows them up. He wants to use my car while I am out of the country for a few months. It is parked in his garage and I would love to help him but he never learns how to take care of cars.He is one of those people that just needs a bus pass.

Does anyone know of a very tough car, he has killed two Mercedes and a Cadillac.

  1. Lol just make him go and get the oil changed at jiffy lube or EZ lube something. Most of the places do it for like $20 with a coupon, at least he wont blow the engine. Two Mercedes and a Cadillac? that's quite a [bad] achievement. I agree with the first answerer though, get a car that has a warranty on it, that should be covered from you son messing with it. But then again they'll probably know he put too little or too much oil in it and the warranty could be voided very easily.

  2. How about a BMW that comes with scheduled maintenance?

Other than that, you might consider a Toyota.  I had a 1993 Toyota 4Runner that I was "rough" with.  Especially when I was in grad school and didn't have any money, I would go 10k-12k miles between oil changes.

I drove the thing frequently at 90+ miles an hour.

I drove over a curb or two, at speed (like 20+ mph).

I hit deer on two different occasions with it.

    etc.

The Toyota took a ton of abuse.  When I sold it with 175K miles on it, it was still in mechanically great shape.

    Which is why I bought another 4Runner, a 2002.

I don't abuse it and I am diligent about keeping up with the maintenance.  It has 130K miles on it and is mechanically in great shape.

  3. Don't give him your car.

Only idiot proof cars are cars under warranty - that somebody else pays for the repair.

    Good Luck...

  4. on most new cars(like a caddi) they have a sensor that shuts the car off when it gets too hot or the oil level gets to low to save the engine that somewhat idiot proof's it but really it's called a dip stick for a couple of reasons one of them being it is not that hard to read

in his case i would sudgest that he not touch the oil cap and check the oil level not every time he hits the pump(it will be off but it will give a rough estimate of where the level is) but at least once every 2 weeks

I understand that some people have trouble opening a hood and puling out the dipstick

But checking once every two weeks will get him under the hood and he may notice other small things (like burnt spark plug wires etc) that may save the engine or parts of.

I wouldn't let him use your car I would get him a lower class car and actually make him pay for at least part of it if he does good with it sell it and allow him to move onto something more upscale

but oil is the blood of your car without it at the right thickness and level no car will(well ok you could go electric but besides that no car will)run good without looking under the hood from time to time and making sure that the levels are correct and nothing is touching something it shouldn't and everything sounds right

    goodluck

  5. I don't think there could be a car that could take the kind of punishment your son gives it from the sound of it. It sounds like your son is very typical of a lot of young males drivers, who tend to be very reckless with thier cars. It is little wonder why the insurance rates for young male drivers is considerably higher than for females drivers of the same age bracket.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure your son is a fine young man, but he's better off taking a bus. It will be better for both of you.

  6. May be a tank!Ha Ha! Toyota  was the car that never let  me down, I loaned it to  my brother in trepidation, he  blew about four for  my  dad, the same way as  your  son. I bet he is  spoilt  like  my brother was .

Tell him to join a car maintenance  class  and you  may  consider  him using your car. Another way  is to arrange  with one  of your  reliable Friends  to do a weekly oil check. all the best .

  7. I hate to agree but your son shouldn't be driving if he can blow 3 engines when his dad is young enough to post on on yahoo answers.

If I had to guess I'd say a Honda or a Nissan would be the most reliable and mistake forgiving car.
