Question:

Is there such a thing as an unbiased opinion?

I realize that yes, everything is of our own experience and we portray it as we see/comprehend.

But is there an understanding that, yes, I see it my way, but can see it yours too? Is that, in a sense, unbiased opinion? If this is true, and all people understood it as such, wouldn't the world be better off?

  1. I wouldn't call that unbiased as much as recognizing and understanding that something can be viewed in more than one way.  In the end, though, it is too complicated to hold onto the numerous divergent opinions, giving each equal weight.  Our opinions, good or bad, move us toward action.  If we place equal value on two completely opposite ways of thinking, which way do we go?  However, the world would definitely be a better place if more people could / would spend the time and energy to really understand where other people are coming from.

  2. If as I think philosophy is the search for meanings then your view should be unbiased if you are a truth seeker. Truth is relative and ever expanding.

Some might think science is unbiased but the scientists must make an hypotheses to prove it would require some degree of opinion. Then facts will arrive only to be over turned my more facts. Facts are not truth.

  3. Bias is a tricky word because it carries emotional baggage.

If you have reviewed all significant known facts of an issue or event and attempt to reach a judgment that sticks to the facts you could be said to not have a bias.

But another person could say you have a bias, meaning that they don't agree with your decision because of something they know that you don't know.  Perhaps they don't know that you don't know it.  That makes them see your decision as being biased.

Or your judgment could be based upon traditions of your culture that you trust without question and they blind you to better decisions.  You have a bias that is culturally derived, but might not be challenged by others in the same culture.

Perhaps you have been educated to a level higher than anyone else who is involved in the issue or action.  Your decision might appear to be biased as it violates some commonly held belief that you don't share with the others.  They could say you are biased and you could feel otherwise.

So, whether you are biased depends upon several factors, most of them are the perception of bias, although, since we cannot know everything, bias will be reflected even in the best judgments and the wise person always delays judgment to attempt the building of a consensus.  You often don't have to just convince yourself.  Your ability to convince others is often more important to avoid the appearance of being biased.

  4. that's what science is for.

its not about thinking things, its about proving things.

scientific facts are unbiased because they are proven.

only lunatics refuse to accept and agree with scientific facts.

  5. There are tons of unbiased questions.  One's daughter may ask why the sky is blue.  It is simply a question, filled with wonder.  The parent will answer based upon a relatively innocent bias.  The parent may say that the sky just appears to be blue because of the way the sun's rays reflect off the atmosphere.

On the other hand the parent may say, "Because God thought that would be pretty".

  6. not amongst imperfect humans. even an argument could be made not for perfect ones either, its inescapable we experience the world through our five senses and thats not even counting the immensely complex processing of those sensations!

  7. there cant be otherwise it won't be an opinion ?  i think ?

  8. Probably not. There will always be people in the world who do not agree with you.

  9. An easy yes on this one. What most people mean when requesting an "unbiased opinion" is one that merely hides your coloring perceptions and minimizes your predictable responses, as such - having and giving unbiased opinions is easy. Are unbiased opinions possible? Functionally, yes they are, logically- no they're not possible, just like calculus and Euclidean geometry.

  10. No. Every bit of info you receive is colored by your perceptions. Unbiased facts are hard enough. Opinions go one way or another. I don't see how they couldn't be biased.

  11. no

thats a paradox. thats like a true lie,

  12. No the mere fact that we are human subjects our objectivity. Only math is truly objective. It doesn't matter how i see the world 2+2 will always equal 4. Of course math only exists in our minds.

  13. I believe an opinion is biased, otherwise it is not an opinion.

Whereas a fact is unbiased, unless incorrect.
