Is there such a thing as a freshwater coral or do ALL corals live in saltwater?

If there is such a thing as freshwater coral, what are they called?

  1. as far as i know, there is no freshwater coral, coral only lives in saltwater coz they are marine organisms.

  2. Interesting question! I don't see any reason why you couldn't get freshwater corals. In my opinion, I'm guessing they would be soft corals rather than hard ones, as freshwater will not have as much calcium / trace elements to form the hard skeletons you see in hard coral structures. However this depends on the hardness of the water in the area.

There is evidence of freshwater sponges in the Amazon river as seen on the BBC Wildlife programme "Amazon Abyss"
