Question:

Is there such a thing as "Green" Nuclear Power?

Could this be the answer to our energy problems?

Would the "Green" community agree to build these power plants?

  1. Nuclear power is the greenest energy source there is.

The designs of the modern nuclear plant are leaps and bounds better, safer, and more efficient than the ones that were built in the 60's and 70's..  all the ones we are stuck with today.

400 of them would power our entire country cleanly.  There are 130 in operation today.

However; I will take exception to the fellow blaming 'libtards' for the Yucca mountain holdup.  I am a hardcore Libertarian..  the liberals' worst nightmare, and I oppose Yucca mountain.  You might change your mind as well if you lived less than 100 miles from the thing, and would have the waste going pretty much right through your own backyard.  It can be re-refined into a usable product in a different type of reactor, so why not just do that on site?  The transportation of the stuff is the greatest danger.

  3. Wasn't going to answer this question but Joe makes a big assertion that has to be addressed.  Chernobyl was a very bad situation.  But it had more to do with the shoddy construction, and poorly understood science used in the peoples paradise of the the Soviet Union than it had to do with it being a nuclear power plant.

Three mile island had alot of publicity, but no one was actually injured and the plant was shut down before it could reach critical mass.  I would say that this shows that our safety measures, from the 1970's, are effective.

Yucca mountain is built and ready to receive radioactive waste and can safely hold it for tens of thousands of years.  Of course we can't put anything in there because of ten years of lib-tard environmentalists lawsuits.

Lib-tards tell us over and over that life as experienced in the nanny state of France is the utopia we should hope for.  France gets 70% of their power from nuclear.

    Doh!!!

  4. Nuclear power has the ability to generate thousands of megawatts of power 24/7/365 and do so while producing absolutely no green house gases.

The waste from one nuclear power plant will fit under your desk.

Nuclear waste is shipped around the country every day without any incident, problem, or issue, and stored for long term around the country.

The only reason environmentalist are against nuclear is because their goals are not for cleaner energy, but for the elimination of all sources of energy.

It won't be until we're back living in caves with an average lifespan of 35 that they will be happy.

  5. that is an interesting article. While nuclear power does not have harmful emmisions it by-products are very harmful to the environment.

I guess MrJello has forgotten about this like Chernobyl and Three mile island. Maybe he could read up on them and update his answer. Nuclear power can be very dangerous and there is no proven way to store the waste safely for the thousands of years that it will take for it no longer to be harmful.

  6. I guess it depends on the definition of "green".

Thorium looks good but it too has some issues.

Contrary to what the quack Dr. Jello states, the waste from a nuclear plant takes 10s of thousands of years to become inert. If we could determine a method to take the nuclear waste and derive energy from this waste, making it a product and thus not a waste with the end result an inert material, then we have a viable option for waste. As far as the safety of a nuclear plant that is debatable.

There are 424 nuclear reactors worldwide, of which 109 are in the United States. A typical nuclear power plant produces 20 metric tons of spent fuel every year.. Try fitting THAT under your desk.

  7. Yes.   However, the dangers of a nuclear leak or explosion outweigh the cleanliness of the stuff.  Solar and wind power are definitely the cleanest and safest of all.
