Is there such a thing as the study of stories? Like story-ology?

In the book Story of B by Daniel Quinn the main character says that the only thing that sets humans apart from other animals is man's ability to tell stories.

The reasoning behind it is more than I'd like to explain in this question, but one of the main points he makes is that storytelling is an integral part of our being.

Also the works of religious scholar Karen Armstrong also imply similar points.

Anyways I was wondering if any scholars out there have taken it upon themselves to study storytelling as a psychological/sociological/biological mechanism?

  1. Joseph Campbell FTW

  2. There is mythology, history, folklore ect,... I'm pretty sure stories would be put under mythology or folklore.

  3. Peter Graves wrote an excellent anthology of Greek myths in which he interpreted their historicity and implications.Other authors, who often major in classical studies or folklore, have done similar studies;in particularly on ancient India during and shortly after the Aryan invasion, circa 3000bc.
