Yes there is...it's evolved though from duct tape. It's metal looking frabric tape that was used primarily in heating and air conditioning. It's silver so it blended in with the metal duct work. Since most people referred to it as duck tape, the name and uses kind of evolved to what you asked about.

Yes, your friend is just being lazy like most of us and not bothering to make the ending 't' of duct tape noticeable.  But as has been pointed out there IS a brand of the tape named 'Duck" because so many people call for it that way.
