Question:

Is there such thing as a 45rpm hand-crank portable gramophone/phonograph thingy?

See my question. I googled and ebayed and couldn't find any so I wondered if they existed. I don't know anything about all this record stuff but I just like the idea of having a record player I could take to the beach or something that plays something a bit more recent than 1930s stuff. If they don't exist, why not?!

Help anyone?

  1. No, there is no such animal.

You are thinking of the old 78r.p.m. machines which had a spring driven (wind-up) motor and an acoustic horn for listening to the audio.

45r.p.m. extended play records were introduced in the 50s or 60s and have to be played on a more modern record player.

  2. Turntables are very prone to vibration. And dust contamination is a big problem for LP's - let alone what the hot sun will do to a   disk.

Tape (8 track and Cassette) work better and MP3 players with no moving parts are superior and the batteries last a lot longer.

  3. They most certainly existed but these are true antiques and if you find a working system it will cost you.

  4. hand crank record players went out about 1929. modern records are made with equalization,  they have the high frequencies emphasized. On playback, the amplifier tones down the high frequencies, which also reduces most of the mechanical scratchy noises. Recordings made for acoustic playback were clay impressions that were fired like ceramics to stand up to the heavy weight of the horn. A vinyl plastic record used for 45's should  be played with a stylus pressure of only a couple of grams.
