I'm from Nevada and someone once told me I have a strong California accent. Is this different from regular non-regional dialect? Something about the "a's?"

  1. I have never heard of one

  2. YES there is a distinct California accent.

This dialect DID use filler words like "duude" & "liike" but these two specific stereotypic words were mainly discontinued after Generation X, the younger generation in CA uses different filler words now (watch Mtv's "The Hills" to understand what I mean).

The problem for most Americans in identifing the "Californian accent" stems from the fact that most of the actors or actresses use this same accent, so many American-raised Anglophones perceive this as a standardize variety of our English, alongside the other "accentless" Midwest variety (i.e. as spoken in NE, OK, KS, MO, etc.).

Robert Mcneil did a wonderful documentry series on PBS awhile back which investigated the various varieties our language in the USA.  Click on the link below for more info from that program on the Californication of American English.
