Is there such thing as a country without a military?

Actually Switzerland does have a military, in fact they are a member of NATO.

  1. I'm almost certain Japan has been demilitarized except a small peace keeping force.


  2. Vatican City is the only one I can think of.  The Swiss Army guards them.  I don't really consider them a country although technically they are.

  3. You're in the US, right? The closest is Costa Rica. They do, of course, have paramiltary forces.

  6. Yep, I believe Costa Rica doesn't have a military and if I remember correctly, neither does Switzerland.

  7. Yep. Vatican City is one of them. They have a police force but not a military under Vatican control. Some small islands in the Caribbeans and Pacific don't have an official military either like the Federal States of Micronesia and Haiti (they do have a police and paramilitary units but no official military force.)
