besides being a professional athlete or having some other type of great or rare talent, that is hard to come by

Unless you're incredibly lucky and innately talented, no.

Non-degree jobs usually fall into two categories:

1) Entry level jobs that pay next to nothing, and are dull.

-or-

2) Jobs that require related experience in the field.

If you want to do manual labor, go ahead and forego a degree (although many construction jobs now recommend an associate's degree.) If you're looking to get into some kind of trade (plumbing, electrician, cosmetologist, etc.) you'll either need a degree, a certificate (a miniature degree that can usually be completed in under a year) or an apprenticeship to get started.
