One of the boys I care for as a nanny has an above normal amount of energy and he can't seem to control it. He is very smart and has no problems in school (kindergarten), exept nap time and can actually concentrate on things quite well and has a very good attention span.

But most of the time he is moving at least some part of his body. He cannot sit still at all, ever. When watching TV he will flop all over the couch like a dolphin, do summersaults, or stand on his head. He won't leave his brothers alone, constantly poking them and irritating them. He is so hyper that many times I have to send him into another part of the house in order to get anything accomplished with the other 2 children, such as getting them dressed, or potty training. And I really think he just cannot control this.

There are 3 boys, he is the oldest. The other 2 are active but they are not nearly as hyper as this one.

I have cared for many children and I think this is above normal. Any thoughts?

  1. i had this problem as a kid also. my parents found that reducing the amount of red food coloring i intaked helped lower my energy level. so try not giving them any products with red food coloring and see what happens. it could be a trial and error test to find out what foods are making him so hyper.

  2. i can be wicked hyper and its at the most random times

i can focus and i do good in school but i just get wicked hyper sometimes so idk sry

  3. yes, you can have only the hyperactive part of the disease....my son does

  4. Yes, according the DSM-IV, one can have ADHD without hyperactivity as well as ADHD withougt attention-deficit.  But, if it's not affecting his school work as far as academics and he is not getting into trouble, then it shouldn't be a problem.  A child should have one safe outlet - and home should be it.
