Is there such thing as a "maternity doctor"?

When woman are set for their delivery, they usually call a doctor in to deliver the baby. I'm thinking about maybe being a doctor rather than a maternity nurse, but there really isn't anything else I'd rather do than being in a delivery room.

  1. Yes, an obstetrician (OB) is a doctor who specializes in pregnancy and labor.  They will see women throughout pregnancy, delivery and a period of time following birth.

A gynecologist (GYN) specializes in the health of the female reproductive system.  They diagnose and treat female reproductive diseases and disorders.  This can include cancer and infertility.

Typically, the two fields are merged into one (OB/GYN), thus making a "maternity doctor" more than just someone who is in the delivery room.

Another professional who may be called a "maternity doctor" is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM).  A CNM is a registered nurse who has specialized in prenatal care and delivery of babies.

  2. Ummm, an OB/GYN - obstetrician gynecologist...

  3. duh, OB/GYN - obstetrician gynecologist

  4. what about a nurse midwife. they deliver babies just like doctors do. the biggest difference is they can't do surgical deliveries. A maternity doctor is an "obstetrician" I delivered two of my babies with a nurse midwife. No doctors were involved. nurse midwives work in hospital, birth centers and attend home births
