I've heard of a rope halter but was wondering if there's such thing as a rope bridle? I've seen bitless ones but I need one that I can add a bit to. It also needs to be draft size. Thanks

  1. Yes, go to your local tack store you may see on there.  I prefer leather myself.

  2. Go to this website  http://www.crazyropes.com/plrobr.html.  There is one on there for $20.  I bought a indian hackmore from her and its awesome quality, she does a good job.  My friend also bought a bridle-hackmore combo and she loves it!

  3. I have seen someone braid rope and make one out of that... so yes.

  4. its not called a bosal. Thats something very different. I've heard of a rope bridle. The one that comes to mind is the Vaquero style bridle, its rope, pretty cute design. horse.com has it I think. I'm not a fan of using synthetic tack, I like te traditional leather. Which you can buy at varried prices but for a draft, that would be a bit more pricey.

  5. yes, i have made them

  6. what you can do is get a haulter and buy a set of clip on reigns, then clip them to the haulter.

  7. Yeah, I think its called a bozzle.

  8. I don't think I have ever seen a headstall made out of the same rope they use for halters. (Not to say there is no such a thing).

The only rope I have seen on anything you put on a horses head is a nose band for a tie-down or side pull.

I guess they use a small type of rope for some of the gag-bits that pull down on the horses poll.

You may have to invent one.  =)

ADD;  Thanks Arabianhorses, those are very cool.

  9. I too prefer the leather bridles, plus, they are more comfortable for the horse. You can buy draft leather bridles, all Amish leather folks make them.   And no, rope bridles are not called bozzles....I know that you meant bosal, but they aren't called that either.  A bosal doesn't even have a bit in it when you first use it, some people always use it without a bit, but eventually, it's a good way to introduce a bit to your horse by hanging it within the bosal and using both actions at once.

  10. Try here:

hand knotted Draft Horse Sized Rope Side Pull.

I believe they make these or have them made.  What I would ask them is whether they offer this model with a removable ring snaffle bit.  If they do, thats the one you would want.  Otherwise, you may need to buy one rope sidepull with no bit and then later, one with a bit (I've never seen a model with a removable bit, usually you choose whether you want a snaffle-bit sidepull or a bitless sidepull).  But they might be able to make you an interchangeable one if you tell them what you want.

Another option would be to use a Natural horsemanship type rope hackamore now, and then get a rope sidepull with a bit later.

The difference is that the rope sidepull (without a bit) gives you a higher (more lateral) rein position, which actually does not give you as much control as a rope hackamore does.

    Hope this helps!
