  1. If you count a "thought" or an "idea" or a "concept" as a thing, then clearly, there is such a thing as "nothing".  "Nothing" is a concept.  It is the "null set".

If "nothing" didn't exist, then nobody would be able to respond to this question, because nobody would understand what you are talking about.

  2. Well here's a question for you - do you believe that infinity exists?  Since we can prove it mathematically (i.e. we can always add 1 to whatever number we come up with - very linear, but it proves the point), I'll assume you do believe in the infinite.  The inifinite encompasses everything.  If everything exists infinitely, then nothingness exists infinitely.  However if nothingness exists infinitely, then it's hard to say how anything else can exist period.

So the simple answer is that nothingness and the infinite are both reliant on each other - one can't exist without the other.  If something exists than so does nothing.

  3. Before the universe, there was nothing. I know it's hard to imagine.

  4. It's called empty space.  That is nothing (no air, no atoms, nothing).

    There you go.

  5. Nothing can be used to refer to quantities, such as saying that I have no airplanes, so the amount of airplanes that I have is none, so it can be used in this context. However as nature naturally destroys a vacuum there is almost never absolutely nothing within an area. Nothing can not be used to refer to outside the universe, as there can not be nothing outside the universe as there is no outside the universe. A living organism is always doing something, never nothing, because at a bear minimum we are enacting life sustaining processes.

  6. what is nothing? the absence of something, but always the presence of something else. so what you are really asking is, "is there such a thing as the absence of one thing, and the presence of another thing in its place?" The answer is yes. An absence of one thing is always the presence of another thing. For example, since the wall is not painted red, then it must be true that the wall is painted another color (such as blue). The absence of one color, is the presence of another.

This idea is one of the reasons why i believe in reincarnation, because the absence of one life, must be the presence of another.

When people say that god is nothing/does not exist, they are saying that something else exists in god's place. i think people usually replace god with "the world". they say that the world exists in god's place. They say that the world exists, but god does not.

  7. Personally I believe that there is no such thing as "nothing".  There is always matter, no matter how deep you look. I believe that every minute space of this universe is crammed full of "something".

I suppose a physicist might argue that yes, in some tiny miniscule place inside the tiniest part of the tiniest piece of the tiniest molecule, there is a space in which there is nothing.

As a humorous aside, when a woman is upset, you ask her what's wrong and she answers "nothing"... you know that it really means a very big something.

  8. If you don't want to get into it, then why did you ask?

  9. In my perspective, the state of nothingness is either a measurement to determine whether a specific object is present or a matter of personal perspective.  We can't logically say that supposed "empty space" is nothingness because if it didn't exist then the universe as we know it would not exist (a.k.a. everything in the universe would be compressed into a single solitary speck of solid and highly-dense mass with no space whatsoever in between or no relevant difference between chemicals, elements, or other components of our universe, therefore making everything in the universe into its own singular element as all things we perceive literally became one thing.)

The stability of such an object would likely be highly volatile.  Time would not exist because time is the measurement of the motion(s) of the universe as perceived by man, and if there was no "empty space" in which to move, motion would not occur.  Therefore, everything is likely something, even that of empty space.

  10. Before you were born there was nothing.

After you die, there will be nothing.

Enjoy the something while you can.

  11. Nothing is simply the absence of some thing.

  12. Is there such thing as God? if u believe that there is such a thing, then prove me wrong!

Can be said about anything. You may be right about the nothing argument though!  :)

  13. I believe in nothing like I believe in the spirit of christmas. Not Santa Claus, but the feeling of wishing your neighbors happy holidays just for the sake of it.

In the same way, I don't believe one can have "nothing". Nothing is not tangible, and cannot be had. However, there can be....like a presence of nothing. Apathy-the lack of feeling. Though it has a name and is therefore something, it is a title for feeling without something else:a nothing of that other thing.

  14. if you going into outer space and bring an empty box with your and throw the box into outta space, the there is "nothing" inside that box.  b/c even on earth and empty box will still contain all kinds of gas molocules, in outer space there are a few atoms floating here and there but for the most part its doesnt not even contain the most basic of atoms.  hence you have nothing
