  1. There is not set limit to playing with your hamster, but when you play with him outside his cage, the rule is not to make him exercise for more than 20 minutes at a stretch unless he has access to food and water. The reason being a hamster can get thirsty after 20 minutes without access to water and it can weaken him.

So whether you put him in the hamster ball, in his playpen or in a hamster proof room, put him back in the cage after 20 minutes so that he can refresh himselves.

If the hamster still looks active after refreshing, you can take him out again to play but most hamsters get tired after 20 minutes (since their little bodies cannot handle too much strain) and will straight hit their bedding for a snooze after some activity.

More time is definitely not better, however you can play with your hamster for 3-4 periods of 20 minutes in a day provided your hamster can cope with it and is happy with it. Just make sure he is not sleepy or he might bite you in his sleepy mood.

  2. don't handle it for long a maximum of 30 minutes, you have to remember that hamsters are nocternal so your pet might get sleepy.

  3. Yeah you can overhandle them. It gets them stressed out and they could get wet tail and die. I dont know how often to handle them.

  4. You should only play with it for about ten minutes every few hours. Yes, you can over handle them.

  5. Dear Handling a Hamster Inquirer,

Of course not! You can handle a hamster as much as you want, but there are some times when you should not handle it. In particular, you cannot handle your hamster or wake it up while it is sleeping or has just woken up. They will become extremely distressed if you attempt to do this.

During play time, hamsters love to be handled, so as long as you can handle your hamster correctly, there is no problem whatsoever.

  6. Yes! Hamsters can get stressed out just like any other animal. Just watch it for signs of distress and put it back in its cage if it shows any. And keep in mind that the more secure it feels, the longer you'll be able to play with it, so keeping it on the ground or on a stable surface instead of holding it in your hands in the air will keep it happier for longer.

  7. Only handle it 30 min at a time.
