Question:

Is there such thing as "Music Dyslexia"?

Sometimes when I am reading music, I can happen with a song I've been playing for a while and happens especially when I sight read, I can read notes wrong. What I mean by that, is that I can think that an A is actually an F. In other words, I can think a note on a space is actually on the space below it, and a not on a line is actually on the line below it.

I read and write just fine, as you can see, so I don't have normal Dyslexia, but I may have the musical version of it, if there is such a thing.

I've told my friend about it, and he's suffered the same thing before, and he says it's common, but that could just mean we both have this possibly existing disease!

  1. Wow, this is the first time I've heard of that!

I honestly don't think it's a disease. It happens to me often, and I just write the note letter above the note to get over the confusion. You probably just need more exposure to sight reading, because I got better at reading notes correctly after I practiced sight reading.

This type of thing really does happen to a lot of musicians. An overused but true statement makes the music-reading confusion go away: "Practice makes perfect".
