The train system in Italy is great.  Tickets can be bought at the rail station.  I like to look on-line for the schedule, although, I don't purchase my tickets on-line.  If your traveling with a lot of luggage, try to avoid peak times.  The main train station in Venice is on the outskirts of Venice, so depending on where you are going, you'll have to take the Vaporetto system.
