I have windows on my computer and I want to create a file that is blocked unless I put in a password or something. (because I share my computer with several people) I want a file like Word or Open Office Writter. Anyone know how to do this?

  1. In OpenOffice.org Writer, use "save as" to save the document, and select the "save with password" checkbox.  You will then need the password to open the document.

I no longer have MS Word on my system, but I recall that the file/properties dialog had an option for passwords.

Another level of protection would be to have a separate Windows login for you.  Then, when you save files in the "My Documents" directory, they are not accessible to other users on the system.  (Note, however, that anyone with administrator privileges on the system could still get to them by removing your login password.)
