Is there way to limit DSL to one computer?

Can I secretly block the house DSL to my computer since I pay for it? There are others wanting to use it on there computer, they want to freeload by hooking up wires all through my room. Is there a way to SECRETLY block them using my central modem?

They want to buy a router to hook in my room so they can all share.

Not trying to sound selfish or anything, but they already freeload food and everything else.

I just have a Westell 6100 hooked to my computer. Im afraid that when they share the line it will dramatically slow down my connection. Its only 128 kbps. Cant imagine what it will be like with 3 laptops hooked up.

Can I set IP blocks?

  1. You can put MAC address filters in the router and allow only your MAC address to be connected.Look in the security section of your router

  2. Well, there are probably a couple ways you could do it but don't you think they'll start wondering why it only works for you on your computer and not on theirs? If they are smart enough to know they need a router they're going to figure out... eventually... that you've done something to block them and that's only going to make for a more difficult living arrangement.

Instead... why not tell them you'll allow access but you want to take the monthly cost off your rent.  OR... ask them to chip in and get a faster connection so your connection won't be dragged down.  Here too you could tell them you'll get a faster connection for everyone BUT you want the cost taken off your rent!

    Hope this helps. :  )

  3. You should be able to set a router or gateway to accept only your computer's MAC adress, which is unique to your network card.

Of course, you could also tell them to get lost and remove those wires, which is much more simpel and effective.

  4. There are ways to block Internet access (DSL), but they're bound to notice they can't reach the Internet.  You'd have to lie about the cause, and the real reason would probably eventually come out.  All that would do is postpone the inevitable.

Since this is a new request, not tied to the food, etc. they're already mooching, how about being forthright with them about your concerns and asking them to pay, say, $10.00 every month?  If so, get it in writing.  Freeloaders tend to forget details for such things.

Or if you get really brave, confront them about the food.  Since they're asking for even more free stuff, this is a perfect opportunity.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Open the link below and find the appropriate model number from the bottom of the 6100.  When you find the correct model click on the documentation link.  You are searching for a feature that only allows specific PC's to use the router.  It uses a MAC (media access control) address that is unique to each network adapter manufactured.

I selected the first model in the list, but it did not support the access by MAC feature.  Yours may not either.
