I feel like I am at the borderline of this being overstocked. My plan is to have:

- 1 male/female betta or dwarf gourami

- 1m/2f platies

- school of minnows

- 3-5 cories

- 3 otos

- a few shrimp

is this too much? I also do weekly water changes and I always overfilter aquariums. thanks

  1. I say scratch the minnows and the shrimp. The gourami and minows will eat shrimp. Also, If you get a betta, even with a well planted aquarium, I doubt many of the platy fry will survive cuz the betta would chase them down and eat them, more so than other fish b/c the betta perceives them as live food. So I say just 3 male platties or guppies. Only have guppies if you have a dwarf gourami, a betta will attack guppies b/c they are so color full. Other than that, yea, your good!=)

Edit: I agree, the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule is bs. It helps the beginners NOT overstock there tank, but the tank ends up either overstocked or under stocked, depending on the species!(Like keeping a 10 inch oscar in there or 5 guppies. Overstocked or understocked!)

  2. thats fine as long as you dont put the shrimp they might be swimmin with the fishes lol!!!!!!!

  3. That is definitely overstocked.  Whether you believe in the one inch per gallon rule is irrelevant.  Overcrowding a tank leads to aggression and disease.  Personally I also think it makes your tank look trashy.  It's much nicer to have a well designed tank with a few interesting fish rather than cramming as many in as you can.

  4. Your ten gallon tank would be too overstocked. A betta might not be so good with other fish. A school of minnows sound a little too much. A good rule to remember is 1 gallon per one inch of fish. Otherwise your fish may fight of get sick.

  5. yes just by mentioning the words "School of Minnows" says it all...

and do some research first about the fishes you are to place with the shrimps, the shrimps might turn into fish food =)

  6. ok yah, it is overstocked. I think you should tank out either the platies or the minnows out. And it is true that the Dwarf gourami may eat your shrimp! Also be wary of the bettas aggression

So for now it would be something like:

    - Dwarf dourami

    - minnows OR platies

    - cories

-3 otos (make sure your tank is full established before putting them in. they seem very sensitive)

and yes, I agree with mokey41.

    good luck!

  7. putting male/female bettas are not good together unless yr breeding them platies will breed with 1 male/2 females  school of minnows too many for 10 gallon tank,3-5 cories ok 3 otos ok, shrimps dwarf gourmi will eat them
