Is this Boy or Girl Dwarf Hamster?

I bought 2 male hamsters from petco and im questioning the sexes. First off they are "fancy dwarf hamster" which I think look like russian hamsters. 1 of the hamsters is social but smaller and lighter in color also very nice and doesnt bite. The other one is grumpy and bites and is larger. The bigger one looks like he has testies but not sure, cant pick him up because he bites. The smaller one doesnt seem to have testies but the 2 holes a**s and penile hole seem distant instead of closer but i cant tell exactly from al the fur.

Can the smaller hamster have testies just not noticeable?

If they are boy and girl can i still keep them in the same cage? My parents wont let me by another cage and accessories.

what should i do?

  1. I don't think I can help with the s*x of the hamsters, but I do know that dwarf hamsters are a result of imbreeding. That's probably why they are such nasty little creatures. I had one also and couldn't tame it for the life of me.

  2. It should like they are two different sexes!!!! I would go and exchange the boy one(I can't think of another option)!!

    Sorry:(

  3. No boys and girls together, there will be a family.  I think the small one is female.

  4. It sounds like the small one is either a female, or a younger male whos testes haven't dropped yet.Untill you know for sure, devide the cage through the middle with a sturdy piece of material that they can't climb up or break through or somehow get past, which they will find unlimited ways to do if it is a female and she goes into heat. Or, offer to use your own money or earn money to buy another cage, or get one for free or at a low price from a friend or garage sale. This is important even if they are both males, they will probably fight and kill eachother which happened to my freinds dwarf hamsters.

Another idea is to tell your parents that if the small one is a female, you will wind up with a bunch of expensive babies several times a year, with a possible loss to the mom or babies, or if it is a male they will kill eachother. That might change their thoughts about getting another cage.

  5. Dwarf species - Campbells, Winter White, Robovorski or Chinese.

"Russian" is most likely one of the first two - you do want to know which as they are different species. As a general rule of thumb, any site identifying them is simply "Russian" you should be skeptical of the extent of their knowledge.

You already know that "fancy dwarf" is a marketing gimmick and nothing more. Now you just have to figure out what you really have. Do make sure they are both the SAME species - otherswise one definetly needs to go back as they can't live together safely.

Put "grumpy" in a clear container - a small hamster travel cage or even a glass jar will work. Look UP at him to check. This is often easier than trying to turn an uncooperative hamster upside down. Because these are dwarfs, looking for the scent gland can often help with gender identification.

"distant holes" - this would indicate a male, not a female - could be young and the testies aren't that prominant - DOUBLE CHECK - I obviously have not seen your hamsters

Boys and girls together will breed and breed and breed - so will their babies - so you would have to have another cage or several dozen.

You want a same s*x pair. If you do happen to have a mixed pair, there is always the possibility that you already have a pregnant hamster.
