  1. not really.

what are you intending using it for?

    good points :

    2000 lumens

    bad points:

    less than SD resolution

    really low contrast ratio

For movies this is not good at all ,or for games. for presenting powerpoint/ documents etc it would be fine.

edit:   it is barely SD.  sure 640x480 creeps onto the spectrum, but really it's as low as you can possibly go. thats what i was emphasizing, it's not good for dvd as it's less than dvd standards 720x480  (ntsc)  720x576 (pal)

there are great 720p projectors out there, which i would recommend over SD for longevity .

as for the lamps, yes they can cost a lot, but you'll get a lot of use out of them (depending on the model) , unless you really use it for several hours every single day, you will more than likely never have to replace the lamp before you upgrade.

cnet also does some good jargon busting reviews of pj's so check them out, once you find one you like, google the make/model number to find reviews/ prices .

  2. The native contrast level of 600:1 is too low.  The standard contrast level for viewing movie DVDs is 2000:1.  And hopefully your selection is not an LCD projector since DLP projectors are noted to be of higher contrast output.

Check out amazon.com and search for an "Infocus SP4805 projector" refurbished.  It may be just want you are looking for.  Here's a 92" diagonal image shot against a goo.systems.com painted wall:

    Good luck!

  3. The price is reasonable for the performance level (at least based on specs) --- particularly as a business projector (make presentations).

It is an SD projector (standard VGA resolution) which is OK for DVD watching or non-HD games at screen sizes under 80-90". But it won't give a great picture due to the low contrast ratio (anything under 2000:1 is low) ... OK for games but not great for video.

It isn't clear if it accepts HD input (720p/1080i) ... but even if it does the native 640x480 resolution will be the limiting factor.

Brightness is fine ... although the term "peak lumens" suggest that when calibrated to give good colour the brightness will probably be a lot less (but still probably fine in a dim/dark room .. as with most projectors).

As I said to start, for the money it's probably not a bad projector ... but I can't tell anything about the optics, input signal capability, or video processing, and the low resolution makes it unsuitable for much other than DVD watching at relatively small screen size.

You can get a better projector new for a couple of hundred dollars more ... and about the same price if you are willing to buy refurbished or used. Keep in mind the price of a replacement lamp can be $300 or more ... and it doesn't change much with projector cost ... so $358 for a projector with lamp can't be putting much of the price into the projector!
