Our family is going away for a week. We're going to be leaving our pet budgie behind. Is there anything we can do to make sure that he 'survives' well?

  1. i'd recommend leaving him with a friend because they need fresh food and water every day

  2. My aunt and uncle always leave their cockatiel with us.  Birds don't like to be alone, and an emergency might come up.  Your budgie may be upset with you for leaving it alone for an entire week.

  3. Leave him with LOTS of food and water, as much as you can fit in the cage. When I used to leave my cockatiels to go somewhere, I'd leave them with five food dishes overflowing with seed (or just use a large, shallow bowl; the shallower the better as he'll be better able to reach the seeds on the bottom) and five dishes filled to the brim with clean water. Do the best that you can to make sure the food and water dishes are not located under a perch where he can drop p**p and feathers in them. It would also be ideal if you could have someone come over and check on him every 2-3 days; sending him to an unfamiliar place will just stress him out, as will someone he doesn't know trying to handle him; you just need to make sure he has food and water while you're gone, and a mirror to keep him company if he doesn't have one already.

  4. Leave him with a friend if you can.

Otherwise, make sure he has plenty of food and clean water.  If he knows how to use a water bottle that will be better than a bowl since the bowls tend to get dirty.  Make sure he knows how to use it tho... some birds just don't get the bottle thing.

As far as food just his seeds and/or pellets.  Don't leave anything that will rot if he doesn't eat it.

Make sure the temperature is comfortable for your budgie.  Don't go turning off the air conditioner.

    Good Luck!

  5. If you have to leave him behind for a week then try to get a friend to come in and check on your bird as far as food and water go. Also, I don't know about budgies, but I know that with other birds you CAN NOT just over feed it and over water it and hope that it survives.
