I'm getting rid of my old centurion signet road bike for $130. I am thinking about purchasing this road bike instead for around $175-200 so I don't have to buy a new wheelset, gearshifters and excessive components for the centurion. I want this road bike to last for a while. Please let me know if this is a good deal or should I bargain for a cheaper price. Thanks for the help.

  1. I sold a very similar 1988 Schwinn Prelude for almost $300 a few years ago.  It had a slightly fancier Columbus tubing frame, but for the most part was identical.  Ask how many miles are on it, check the frame and rims for any cracks or wear.  Check the frame at the down-tube on the bottom side, where it meets the fork, that's where you'll see any stress cracks. I doubt there will be any on a steel frame though unless it has a million miles.  It's probably in great condition, especially if it has been garage kept all these years.   I see it has new tires on it, that's worth something too.  If this is the style bike your looking for I'd get it.  Test ride it down the street.  There are thousands of bikes in brand new condition in people's garages... people seem to buy them and use them for a few months, then never touch them again.   Compare eBay prices.

  2. It's an old bike. Max I'd spend is $175. You should see this in person and check the fit. The person selling it correctly states that it is a big frame. The average rider would buy a 21 or 23" frame, not a 25.5". Check the frame over for rust and cracks. Pull the seatpost to check for rust. the seatpost is the most neglected component on most bikes. If you can't pull it out (happens way too often), walk away. Cracks most often form at the bottom bracket and head tube/down tube junctions. They've put minimal money in it judging from the tires. Check the chain for stretch by pulling the chain off of the rear cog. If a significant gap results, know that you will need to change the chain AND the cassette. Definitely change the brake pads to red Kool stops especially since the rims are hard anodized. You will stop significantly shorter. On the other hand, the bike looks like it's in decent condition. I'd also check out a used Bianchi Volpe, a true touring bike. Good value and the bike still is being made.
