Question:

Is this a 'click' beetle?

On a couple of occasions recently, I have found beetles in the house. They are around half an inch long, mid brown in colour and have elongated bodies. When I attempted to sweep them onto the brushpan to throw them outside, they launched themselves a few inches into the air and made a 'click' sound. When they landed, they appeared to be dead (legs tucked in), but when I again tried to sweep them up, they 'clicked' and jumped again! I have never come across these things before, despite being an avid gardener for nigh on thirty years. What on earth are these things and how do I get rid of them? I live in the North of England and would welcome comments from anyone, but particularly from anyone in my area.

  1. Here's what I know about clickbeetles. They have a bioluminescense like fireflies. Supposedly when they "click" they make little sparks in the dark.
