Is this a Converb? a super controversial converb?

CONVERB: A contrary proverb, the mission of the Converb is to be as controversial as possible in as few words as manageable. There are no rhyme or meter requirements, just hit hard and get out.

Racism is intolerable,

but sexism we tolerate.

  1. yeah....i'm not sure that's the definition of a converb. i thought it was: A converb is a non-finite verb form that serves to express adverbial subordination, i.e. notions like 'when', 'because', 'after', 'while'.

it is a verb that isn't strong enough to support an independent clause but rather a dependant one. i also found this: "Not to be a wet blanket, but this is "word play"...not a "converb"...the term is increasingly being misused. Elaine, your word play is very well done, my only concern is that continued misuse by top contributors of YA may contribute to the proliferation of further misunderstanding and malapropism of the word "converb" by those who don't understand a very specific linguistic term.

The definition of a converb is: "In general linguistics, a converb is a non-finite verb form that serves to express adverbial subordination, i.e. notions like 'when', 'because', 'after', 'while'."

Word play is:"a literary and narrative technique in which the nature of the words used themselves become part of the subject of the work. Puns, phonetic mix-ups such as spoonerisms, obscure words and meanings, clever rhetorical excursions, oddly formed sentences, and telling character names."

he was actually correcting someone with apparently the same confusion.

  2. its no lie when i say i thought about that the other day....racism is intolerable but sexism isn't

  4. thanks for explaining what the converb is!! ;)

  5. "Hi!"

That was a very well done Converb.

    Cheers : )

  6. As I said in an old Converb:

    like the Universe

    the glass ceiling expands

    but does not break

EDIT: Babybole, you are talking about a converb with a small c, which is a linguistic form.  This is spelled with a capital C, invented by poet/publisher TD Euwaite. There are many such words in English (statement & Statement, for example).
