Question:

Is this a Good chess Idea?

I am going to Change my entire opening repertoire.

I almost exclusively play D4. with white, and end up playing a queen's gambit.

and with black i almost always use the slav defense/or French

defense.

So, I am going to completely change up what I Use, and i may even switch to e4.

Any suggestions on what openings to Use?

  1. that sounds awsome, i am going to try it

  2. Hello --

    1. c4 ... the English opening is good.  I have been playing it for years and it is very sound.  One of the benefits of learning the English is that it gives you a leg up learning the Sicilian.

    1. e4 ... is still considered the strongest opening move, by most players.  Bobby Fischer played it most of the time.

    1. Nf3 ... is worth considering -- it forces black to commit himself to a system.  Peter Leko was a great advocate of it.

www.chessgames.com is a great resource for chess questions.

    Good luck in your journey.

  3. If e4 you must have a line for the Sicilian (or several lines to avoid being predictable)  I recommend never playing the same thing twice so Sicilianers hate playing you.  (Wing gambit, closed, Larsen, and Smith -Morra are weird and varried.)  Of course, that is just me.

You'll also face the French with annoying regularity.  Not as often as the Sicilian, knowing one line as white really good.

    Ditto the Caro-Kan't.

Occasionally you'll face a weirdo playing the Alekhine.

98% of everything else transposes into a Pirc.

On the rare occasions you see 1...e5 you may want a move 2 variation to short circuit the Russians and Phildor's (anything weird like Damiano you can figure out over the board)  I've seen the King's Gambit and the center game with an attempt to transpose into the Scotch.

As for defenses, I was partial to Alekhine's (1.e4 Nf6) and oddly the Tchigorin (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 [yes it is playable but you'll get weird looks - of course I played the Alekhine so maybe that is just me:)])

I'm afraid I can only tell you what openings to not bother with.

Only twice have I lost games where all my moves were reasonable so the first one is to blame.  Nimzowitch's defense (Not Nimzo-Indian but 1 e4 Nc6) and the Dutch.

  4. it depends on what positions you are comfortable in. it seems to me that you like sharp, unbalanced positions. therefore, i'd suggest the sicilian dragon or najdorf as black where there are many complications. as white, try the london system which starts as 1. d4 black moves 2. Bf4, with the idea trying to gain a stronghold in the center. positions tend to be much different that a queens gambit

  5. my most favorite opening is the two knights opening you can fork there rook and queen. good strat. thats how i win all my games.
