Question:

Is this a bad strategy for getting supplies for a wedding?

My wedding isn't until June 2010. I was thinking of getting a credit card for 6 months same as cash and putting more pricey items on it and having it paid off by December of this year so the interest wont be tacked on and go through the roof. Afterwards, I planned on picking things up every paycheck and using discount coupons... things such as center pieces, table cloths, etc. I just think doing it this way would be way easier than lumping it all together and buying it all at once. Do you think this is smart, or should I buy it all at the same time when I'm way closer to the wedding date?

  1. If all you’re going to do is make payments on credit cards anyway, why not put what you would have paid into savings where you can earn a tiny amount of interest and then pay for your items in cash?

That way you’re not opening a bunch of new credit lines, which will drop your credit score, and you’re not opening the doors to charging too much just because the plastic is there.

I wouldn’t be buying anything this early. I still have a box of c**p I bought too far before my wedding and then had no use for. I’d save money and wait a bit. You never know what you’ll want in two years.

  2. NO credit card for your wedding. It's not worth it.

You still have PLENTY of time and there is no need to rush buying it all now. You will regret this as you may change your mind/ change colors or may see something better and better priced later.

Buy things little by little along the way. Buy ON SALE only after season have passed, Check craiglist for gently used wedding items.

    Good luck

  3. Skip using the credit card.  It can get you into trouble.  We did buy things when they were on sale.  You almost two years to collect the necessary supplies.

  4. Skip the credit card entirely.  Just save money and pick up things as you go.  Pay for them with your credit card, but then take the money out of your wedding savings and slap it down immediately.  This 'paying it off by December' is RARELY followed through and interest just raises the costs of your wedding.

  5. My bro and SiL got a CC a year before their wedding. They put all their expenses on it and it earned them enough miles to go on their honeymoon almost for FREE! They had the money to pay for everything and paid the bill in full every month. They only got the card because of the benefit of the miles and it established credit for them as a couple. It worked out really well for them only because they could AFFORD the things they put on the card and the bonus miles were what they were after.

You could just start buying things now with your paychecks, a little at a time, if you can't so it all cash at once. But if you can pay your monthly balance then find a card that offers good rewards and make it worth your while.

    Good luck!

  6. It's a great idea to pick up things here and there and to start early. Go with the bargains and shop around for deals!! I find great deals at www.theknot.com with their sales from their online store (a little trick... pick what you want to buy and add it to your shopping cart... then sign out without completing your order... in less than 24 hours they will send you an email saying that you left without purchasing the products in your cart and they give you a code for 10% off for those products purchased if you do it that day!!!), also I use www.orientaltrading.com for their wedding supplies are very nice and very cheap! They have free shipping if you get their free Wedding magazine too (it comes with a free shipping code). Also, if you know exactly what you are looking for... try www.overstock.com they have very low prices (I got the bridesmaids gifts there for 75% off)!!! Good Luck! Hope this helps!

  7. Do not finance your wedding in any way on credit!  This is a horrible idea and you will only regret it in the long run.

You have plenty of time to actually save the cash before you get married and that will be the best option in the long run.

  8. that is a great way to go. If you get it now you won't be stress later on.

  9. Its good to spread the purchases out instead of one big payment.  But be sure you have a safe palce to keep it and you wont change your mind or you will have to deal with extras!

  10. just save what you have to each month to total the amount you want to spend on the wedding and then buy everything within a year. you want things to go together. i've made the mistake of buying little things here and there waaaay before the wedding and then things look piece-meal, know what I mean? then when you're closer to the date, you'll have a pretty solid vision and the money to pay for it!

  11. I would not buy anything on credit if I didn't already have the money set aside to pay the bill when it came.  If you're going to get a 6-months-interest-free card, have the money in a bank account before you buy the stuff so that you will pay it all off when the bill comes.  Don't assume you'll save the money between now and then: have it on hand, in a bank account that you use for nothing else but the wedding.  You have almost two years before the wedding.  I'd spend that time saving as much money as I could, and not on buying things.  You may well change your mind about what you want in terms of colors, decorations, and whatnot and then you're stuck with stuff you can't use and can't return because you bought it two years ago.

As the wedding gets closer (eight or nine months away) do buy things gradually and use coupons and sales, but don't tie up your money two years out, and don't use credit.
