Question:

Is this a board thing or me??

So I have only had my one snowboard every since I started boarding 3 years ago. It is a reallly light and flexible board. When I go on powder days I tear it up and have a great time, however when I go when the powder has hardened or on a groomed run I always catch my edges way more often. I am at least 2 times better on powder days. A friend suggested beveling my edges. But do I just need to get a stiffer, heavier board? Do those work better on groomed runs?

  1. I would say that catching an edge is probably because of your skill level. Usually beginners catch edges. If that is the case, Just practice more. Softer boards are usually used in terrain parks, and they have detuned edges. You can detune your edges ( but i would not recommend that; The edges will eventually wear out if you dont file it)

I dont think a heavier board or a stiffer board will help you with the edges, But it will be more stable when you go at high speeds.

Perhaps also check on your bindings. Put more forward lean on the highbacks so it is easier to do heelside turns, which will help with picking your edges up.

Also notice if you have toe and heal drag.( if your toes or heels hang over your board; mainly if you have large feet with a narrow board).

I use to have problems with toe and heel drag, when you turn and lean too much, your boot touches the snow and your board loses its edge.

Hopefully one of these things will solve your problem without having to round your edges(unless you are going to be using it in the park).

  2. Its you dude, detune your deck. You will be fine. Everyone catch's edges especially on crappy icy death snow.
