Question:

Is this a crazy idea?

I'm about four years off from turning sixteen and getting a car. However, I don't really want to be driving a car? Gas prices are expensive, oil prices are skyrocketing, and there are hundreds of accidents that happen on the road everyday. I would like some ideas of different transportations, places to move, ex.

  1. lets see there's taking a bus, riding a bike, and walking [which is what i mostly do everyday after school]

  2. Get a Stanley Steamer. Runs on coal and water.

  3. get a bike or use public transportation there is not much to choose from if you dont want your own car.

  4. Bus Pass

  5. You're 12?  In four years, when all of your friends have cars and it's a big part of high school social life, your opinions may change.

Learning to drive is a valuable skill even if you prefer to take public transportation when you can.  If you don't ever learn, you'll be pretty much out of luck living anywhere but the middle of a big city (which can be expensive, and somewhat unpleasant).

Someone mentioned NYC....there are other areas with decent public transporation, like Chicago and San Francisco, and Seattle.  But they're also some of the most expensive places in the country to live- and unless you've got a hearty trust fund, you're not going to be able to afford it when you're 18, or even when you first graduate college.

Gas prices for a little Honda Civic Hybrid or something will look like heaven, compared to your rent in a 1-room efficiency in the crappy part of NYC (over 1200-1500 bucks a month).

If you're smart about your driving, plan your trips wisely, don't romp on the accellerator and you drive a fuel-efficient car or a hybrid, you won't have to worry about spending a ton of money on gas.  You can take defensive driving courses to learn how to avoid accidents, and stay on roads without a lot of traffic until you get your confidence up.  Yes, there are hundreds of accidents every day, but 100 MILLION people get to and from their destinations, safely, every day as well :)....your odds are pretty good!

  6. >> places to move,

    Move to NYC.

There are many people with no cars here.

There are many people with no driver's license here.

We have amazing public transportation.  That will solve all your problems.

    Good Luck...

  7. scooters , mopeds ,, in 4 years who knows where gas will be

  8. If you live in the city, use public transportation. Ride a bike. Get a moped or small motorcycle (The Harley Sportster gets 50 mpg for under 10 grand and is still badass). Walk. Hitchhike. Besides, in a few years, we will have reliable electric cars from most of the major auto makers (many by 2010).
